“Should I be on Threads?" Here’s the Answer to the Question Everyone is Asking.
"Should I be on threads" - this is the question everyone is asking.
I am looking at this strictly from a creator's perspective - so if you are a brand, be it a personal brand or a business, here's how to decide whether or not to join Threads and create content.
There is a very important aspect of social media platforms that is missing from the conversation, and understanding this missing piece is crucial because it holds the answer that will help you shape your brand strategy for every social media platform, including Threads.
Ultimately, there are two key factors that make each social media platform unique:
The capabilities it offers
The audience it attracts
Every platform gives you a different way to communicate your message and build your community, and every platform has an audience that is there for a different reason, expecting to receive a different type of content
This is the reason why TikTok videos repurposed for Instagram just don't feel right - if the audience wanted TikTok videos, they would go to TikTok.
When your audience is on Instagram - they want the Instagram style of content.
This doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn’t push the limits of creativity on each platform - that's how you really stand out from the crowd - but using the tools that Instagram gives you to post on Instagram is going to help you to connect with the Instagram audience better than something that feels out of place.
And so here's what really excites me about Threads:
By combining the capabilities for:
500-character posts
Photos
Videos up to 5 minutes long
links
while also removing creation tools from the platform, you suddenly are blessed with a seemingly less restrictive way of communicating to an audience, who, as of today, are very open-minded about the content that they want to digest and engage with.
And that’s really, really exciting.
Threads has presented a brand new opportunity to craft a unique, compelling, and effective communication style for an audience looking for something fresh and new. And, from what I can tell, it seems to have eliminated some of the friction that exists when creating content for other platforms because
You're not limited to a specific communication style
The audience is looking for something fresh and is open to something new
So, Threads is here to stay and I highly recommend you get on it to start figuring out how to craft a new style of communication that reflects what you and your brand are all about.
And here’s a sidenote - I have already done something on Threads that I haven't done in a long time. After automatically following all the accounts I follow on Instagram - I immediately unfollowed a ton.
After briefly scrolling through the feed, I unfollowed anything and everything to do with news, current events, and politics - I just don't want it on threads. I don't mind it on Instagram, but I don't want it on threads.
And the other thing I don't want - is the same content from Instagram or TikTok creeping over to my feed on Threads. I know where to find you if I want to see your other content. I don't wish to see the same thing I see in other places in a place where I am looking for something fresh and new.
See you there!
